OVERVIEW:

The golden age being covered is the Gupta Empire. The Gupta Empire was an ancient Indian empire existing from approximately 320 to 550 CE, where it controlled much of the Indian subcontinent.

MAJOR EVENTS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Prospering middle class.
  • Modernized law code compared to the Roman Empire, with most crimes being punished with fines rather than death. 
  • Mathematical contributions:
    • In the year 500, Arybhatta calculated part of pi, having developed the decimal system just years before.
    • Arybhatta thought of the concept of zero.
    • Invented modern number system, as they developed 1-9, which was later refined by the islamic empire.
  • Astronomical contributions:
    • Arybhatta was among the first to say that the earth went around the sun and wasn’t flat.
    • Contributed to the reasons of lunar and solar eclipse occurrences.
  • Medicinal contributions:
    • Development of a medicine known as ayurvedic, one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems. It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments may be geared toward specific health problems.
    • Began the usage of mercury and iron in medicine.
  • Poetry started to flourish when Chandragupta II became king.
  • Creation of chess (Sissa's reward), Sissa Ben Dahir, a grand vizier who gave it to the king of the time. This version of chess only had one set of the pieces we have today, and the other half of the board was replaced with treasure and gold. This game would be modernized into out version of chess in the 13th century in Persia.
